Frequently Asked Questions

Questions

What is Bible Bowl?

Bible Bowl is a youth event designed to encourage the study of God’s Word.  Participating young people are brought together for fellowship and testing of their knowledge over the selected Bible text or topic. This year (2010) we are studying the book of 2 Samuel.

At what age may young people participate?

Bible Bowl was originally designed for young people in the 6th-12th grades.  Starting in 2009 Bible Bowl is added a new elementary division for young people 5th grade and below.  We will continue to have junior, senior and adult divisions.

How should our young people be organized for testing over the Bible material?

Young people will be tested and compete as teams and individually.  You should place your young people into teams consisting of four members (girls and/or boys).  There will be three divisions:  the Elementary Division (5th grade and below), the Junior Division (6th-9th grades) and the Senior Division (10th-12th grades).  Younger aged youth may be placed on Older Division teams if desired to form a team, but Older aged youth may NOT be placed on Younger Division teams.  The three divisions will be divided into six classifications:  Elementary Experienced, Elementary Inexperienced, Junior Experienced, Junior Inexperienced, Senior Experienced, and Senior Inexperienced.  The definition of an “experienced” team is one that has 2 or more youth that have taken part in the Bible Bowl you are competing at before.  Each team member will individually take each section of the test.  A cumulative team score will be determined as well as separate individual scores.  Individual competition will be based on each participant’s classification (experienced or inexperienced), not on the participant’s team classification.

What if you have youth that want to participate but can’t form complete teams of four members?

If you have young people who want to participate, but not enough to complete a team of four members, bring them along.  We will match them with youth from other congregations in need of team members on the day of  Bible Bowl.

Of what will the test consist?

The test will be a written test with several sections.  The sections will include:  Find the Verse, Multiple Choice Identification, Chapter Events and Content, Verse Quotes, and General Information Multiple Choice.  Some rounds will be open Bible (so each team member will need their own New International Version Bible) while other rounds will be closed Bible.  Students are allowed to mark the pages of their Bible but no loose paper notes or other study aids will be permitted.  Each section will have a prescribed time limit depending on the type and number of questions.

In keeping with the format of the college Bible Bowls and the Kansas Bible Bowl, there will also be a “Power Round” that will consist of questions in any form.  The “Power Round” will be considered in determining individual scores but not team scores.
